Seasonal Announcements

Cooler weather has finally moved into the Mid-Atlantic!  You might want to consider thinking about those planting beds you have been neglecting over the hot months.  Now is the time to till up your existing soil and add nutrient rich organic matter.  The plants will thank you when the temperatures start to rise.  It's also the time to over seed and aerate your lawn.  Fertilizer can be added to the mix. Fertilization is important, however, be careful when applying it to your yard.Nearly 70% of fertilizers run into the Chesapeake Bay. Save the Bay! Apply your fertilizer carefully. Be sure to avoid spraying it in your beds and hard surfaces such as driveways and sidewalks. When in doubt, ask a professional for advice.

 One other thing to consider during the wonderful cooler weather is mulching.  Mulching in the fall helps insulate beds and protect root systems during the winter months.  Allow three to four inches of depth for the new mulch and always avoid building up the mulch around the main stems of shrubs and trees.  Too much mulch equals rotting in the bark and stems of plants.  Have a wonderful season!
